6 Critical Mistakes Beginning Internet Marketers Make and How To Avoid Them

November 12, 2008 – 7:48 pm

If you’re just starting out in internet marketing or even if you’ve been around awhile, there are some critical mistakes I’d like to point out that traps even the best of us.

These mistakes are often disguised and the beginning internet marketer  is often swept up into a confusing and and diabolical scheme before he or she has any clue as to what has happened.

The results can be devastating to your internet marketing efforts and leave you dazed, confused and wondering where all your money has gone. Your dream of earning extra money or working from home on your computer will vanish in a cloud of disgust.

Why am I telling you this? Because I’ve been there. I know how the internet marketing game is played. It’s full of traps and clever hype designed to grab your money and give you little in return.

With that said, here are some things you should look out for.

1. Although they are masters of persuasion and can make you believe you are facing disaster without them, internet marketing gurus do not have your best interest at heart.

The primary objective of these so called gurus is to transfer money from your bank account to theirs. Your success is not their primary concern and frankly the majority care little if you succeed or not.

To avoid critical mistake number one avoid so called internet marketing gurus like the plague.

2. Except for a small bit of pocket change, google adsense is pretty much a waste of time. A few years ago, different story. But today, to make real money with adsense you need thousands of pages and thousands of visitors to your websites daily. This isn’t to say you can’t pick up a few clicks and make some small change with adsense, but you should only use adsense as a secondary monetization method.

To avoid critical mistake number two don’t buy adsense courses, ebooks, or listen to those who would have you believe adsense is a big money game.

3. Google adwords and other pay per click advertising is another marketing ploy for the beginner to avoid. Adwords and pay per click are for players who know how to play and have money to lose. Lots of marketers make tons of money with adwords. Problem is, you don’t just throw up an adwords campaign and make money. You have to invest hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars before you can make a campaign profitable. The adwords course sellers don’t tell you this. I’m telling you for your own benefit.

To avoid critical mistake number three, stay away from adwords and other expensive pay per click advertising methods until you have money to set up and test a campaign properly.

4. You don’t need overpriced, overhyped expensive courses to learn how to make money online. The gurus are constantly promoting and selling high priced internet marketing courses that you will get little effective strategies from. They are certainly not worth the price.

In fact  I’m stating you can learn everything you need from a few inexpensive ebooks. But not just any ebook. There are three I will recommend in the course of writing for this blog. You can take just one of these and be profitable. I’ve bought dozens of ebooks and courses and from all these I only recommend three. The rest are a waste of time and money.

To avoid critical mistake number four, don’t let yourself get hooked into buying overhyped, overpriced internet marketing courses that promise everything and deliver little.

5. Here’s a trap that’s easy to fall into. Getting on to many internet marketing mailing lists. The reason it’s so easy is because they, the promoters, promise you some form of information you think you need so you subscribe to their mailing list to get it. The fact is it’s only a ploy to get your email address so they can sell you stuff.

Listening to too many people will leave you confused. It’s best to only subscribe to one or two email lists and if the person is only trying to sell you the latest and greatest internet marketing ebook or course, unsubscribe!

To avoid critical mistake number five banish the temptation to subscribe to email lists. Find preferabby one, no more than two people you want to follow and stick with them.

6. Membership sites and recurring billing. This is the internet marketing gurus dream. To get you hooked into a membership site with recurring billing. In all honesty rarely have I found that membership sites are worth the monthly price. Some are rarely updated and when they are it’s only paltry information.

The only exception to this is if there is a piece of software or other application at the host site that can benefit your business.

To avoid critical mistake number six stay away from membership sites and other promotions with recurring billing except in the case of a product or service that will benefit your internet marketing business.

Marketing profitably on the internet is not as easy as many internet marketing industry pushers would have you believe. Most so called experts in the industry are more interested in their bottom line than yours.

Treat your internet business like you would any other business and avoid the traps that line the way and you can have a profitable internet business and the lifestyle you dream of.
